If for any reason you may have questions about the products that we carry, please contact us by telephone, email or just simply stop by; a staff member will be happy to answer any of your questions and if they cannot, your questions will be addressed to a doctor or the manger of the hospital.

Flea & Tick Preventatives

Our staff here at Hoboken Animal Hospital does not recommend using flea sprays and flea collars for your pets, they are NOT as effective as a topical or oral flea preventatives such as Frontline/Program.

Frontline can be applied to cats & dogs 8 weeks and older.  It is a topical product that is applied between the shoulder blades once a month and when used properly, will kill both fleas and ticks.  We recommend you apply this preventative every month.

Heartworm Preventatives:

By Prescription ONLY. Heartworm medication is a preventative against heartworm disease, or the formation of worms in the heart and lungs transmitted by mosquitoes. Heartworm testing is a simple blood test, recommended at 6 months of age and done once a year for the rest of the dog's life to detect heartworm disease. Heartworm testing for dogs is mandatory in order to get continuous refills on heartworm medication. Cats do not require heartworm testing prior to preventative refills. If for any reason your dog does not get the heartworm tablet and has skipped a month, you will need to get a heartworm test prior to continuing the medication. It is extremely important to know the status of your pet's heartworm results before giving heartworm pills.  We carry several types of heartworm medications.

Heartgard is a chewable, beef flavored, oral medication that can be given to cats & dogs 6 weeks and older. We recommend you give this medication to your pets EVERY month year-round and have your dog heartworm tested once a year, every year for the rest of its life.

NexGard kills fleas and ticks fast, all month long, and is the only chew that’s FDA-approved to prevent the infections that cause Lyme disease by killing black-legged ticks. Safe for dogs and puppies as young as 8 weeks, weighing 4 pounds, through adulthood.

Bravecto offers 12 weeks of continuous protection against fleas and ticks for dogs and cats. FDA approved and proven safe for both dogs and cats for 12 weeks.

Microchips

Here at Hoboken Animal Hospital we offer a microchip product manufactured by Home Again.  Pets get lost all the time and 90% of those without a microchip never get returned to their original home.  Statistics show that 94% of those pets who are microchipped do get returned to their original owners.  Every time a pet is lost and brought here to the Hoboken Animal Hospital, it is our policy to scan the pet for a possible microchip and to contact Home Again so they can reunite the pet with their owners.  We have contacted other local animal hospitals in our area and surrounding areas, as well as local animal shelters and they too have a scanner and will provide the same courtesy.  Feel confident that if your pet is lost with an implanted microchip, if found and Home Again is contacted, you will get your pet back sooner than if it did not have one.

The main reason for microchipping a pet is for identification.  If you are planning to travel with your pet on an international flight, many countries now require a pet to be microchipped prior to entering a foreign country.  Microchip identification is their way of verifying a pet.  For more information, please contact the consulate of the country of your destination.
